RNCM International Brass Band Festival 2025 - Brighouse & Rastrick Band
The concluding concert of the 2025 RNCM International Brass Band Festival on Sunday evening was given by Brighouse & Rastrick Band conducted by David Bremner, Principal Trombone of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the New Zealand Wellington Brass. Having already performed with the RNCM Brass Band earlier in the day, David led the band in a programme of varied repertoire, opening with British composer Dani Howard's Warp and Weft which takes its name from the art of weaving. We then hear Brighouse's Principal Cornet Tom Smith in a corerstone of the repertoire, the Concerto for Cornet by Denis Wright. Liz Lane introduces her Silver Rose with narrator Dr Micha Lazarus before the first half is rounded off with Rococo Variations from the Festival's featured composer, Edward Gregson. The second half of the programme continues the Antipodean theme with music composed completely by Australian and New Zealand composers John Psathas, Estella Wallace (trs. David Bremner), Gareth Farr and Paul Terracini. In a tribute to Elgar Howarth, the band concludes with The Old Chalet.
