RNCM International Brass Band Festival 2024 - Black Dyke Band
Black Dyke Band's Saturday evening concert at the 2024 RNCM International Brass Band Festival, filmed at the RNCM Concert Hall on Saturday 27 January 2024, opened with Sir Arthur Bliss's Kenilworth, a cornerstone in brass band repertoire. About 10 years later, in 1946, he wrote arguably one of his finest scores, the ballet music to Adam Zero. Now a suite from this has been transcribed for band by Robert Childs and was premiered at this concert as a partner work to Kenilworth. Stephen Roberts' Shades of the Soul was also premiered; based on the music of Chopin, the work loosely expresses an outline of the Polish composer's life through a series of musical snapshots.
Highlighting their exceptional talent, Black Dyke welcomed two of their own inspiring soloists: award-winning horn player Siobhan Bates performing Philip Wilby's Fantasie Concertante and Michael Cavanagh with Martin Ellerby's Baritone Concerto. The programme concludes with featured composer Oliver Waespi's Antiphonies on themes by William Byrd.
